Burning Man art is an expression of the participatory, inclusive and interactive ethos of the culture. It removes the distinction between artist and audience, inviting all to create, connect and play.
A Year of Never-ending Curiosity
Every year in the Burnerverse has its own essence, its magic and its surprises. Curiouser & Curiouser, if we could give it a flavor, would emerge as a completely new profile — a rich and vibrant mix of salty and sweet, known and audacious. From the dusty expanse of the Black Rock Desert to the pampas of Argentina, the northern shores of Estonia to deserts in Western Australia, the year unfolded a series of whimsical yet very intentional adventures, each one lovingly created by community, for community.
A Vibrant Participatory City Rises, Flourishes for Eight Days, then Disappears
In Black Rock City 2024, participants celebrated near-perfect weather (with the exception of that end-of-week dust-up). The playa came to life with a myriad of glowing, fire-breathing, kinetic marvels — from adorable two-human mutant vehicles to multi-story creative marvels. Artists and makers conjured a dusty playground of larger-than-life whimsy, circuitous rabbit holes, and all manner of mind-bending adventure to inhabit and climb.
Thanks to philanthropic support from the community, art grant funding grew from $1.3 million to $1.45 million, supporting a $150,000 Temple grant and $1.3 million in Honoraria grants to Black Rock City artists. 386 art projects came to life; 76 were funded by 2025 Black Rock City Honoraria grants, and 14 of these came from outside the US.
From sustainable infrastructure to the Green Corridor and other community-led regeneration projects, Black Rock citizens innovated together to move Black Rock City away from fossil fuels and closer to 2030 goals to handle waste ecologically, be regenerative, and be carbon negative. The Man, Temple, Arctica, Art Plazas, Department of Mutant Vehicles, and 18 art installations, and some of the city grids were fully powered by renewable energy.
Center Camp came to life as the city’s vibrant heart: drawing creative humans in through all its arteries, circulating them through art, shenanigans and theme camp wonders, before blasting them back out into the city or open playa.
Burning Man, Everywhere, All at Once
We’re a network of dreamers and doers who ask: “How do we bring what we know and love to life well beyond our favorite dusty sandbox?” From 20 participants at Melting Man in South Dakota to more than 10,000 at South Africa’s AfricaBurn, around the world people came together to create audacious, whimsical, and charitable projects that bring about a brighter, more resilient world. From Singapore to Auckland, Cape Town to Helsinki, the global community produced 87 official Burning Man Regional Events, and hundreds of unofficial gatherings inspired by the 10 Principles. And 46 Burners Without Borders groups nurtured resilience and change through creativity.
A Global Force For Good (And Creative Fun)
Everywhere, people inspired by Burning Man are making culture happen in endlessly inventive ways — sparking innovative gatherings, creating awe-invoking art, and offering relief to communities affected by hardship. Following Hurricane Helene in the southeastern US, Burners Without Borders (BWB) activated their network to support local organizations. The JAGUARA mutant vehicle recently took center stage at the Circuito Terra Experience alongside the COP16 2024 United Nations Biodiversity Conference in Cali, Colombia. And in South Africa, AfrikaBurn collaborates with local organizations to create a free, participatory carnival in the streets of Observatory, Capetown. The list goes on…
How Do YOU Want to Impact the World?
To the uninitiated it may appear a folly, as if Burners are wrapping everything in blinky lights and putting on a furry hat. But the work underway is grand, the task: to imbue what can be a long, hard road with curiosity, connection and imagination, to impact the human journey in a myriad of small ways, making it kinder, closer and so much brighter.
